This lecture deals with the complex topic of costs and resource needs in research data management. There is currently no one model which can be used for calculating costs and determining resource needs. However, this lecture will provide insights for determining projected costs for the provision of necessary services in research data management. This lecture will also illustrate cost-creating aspects of research data management and how cost efficiency and resource requirements can be determined. In addition, it will illustrate who is likely responsible for those costs: the research funder, a national central support service, or the universities and research institutions themselves. Connections between data management plans and the establishment of a central point of contact for research support services will also be made.
