Michael Birkner

turned his personal interest in IT and programming into a career, putting his self-taught skills to work first as a website designer, later in the areas of databanks and search applications. In 2004, he began his degree in comparism at the Vienna University, while working at the Medical University of Vienna library. There, he implemented the first software for long-distance lending to be used in a library. Since 2012, he has worked at the library of the Chamber of Labour in Vienna (AK). There, he is responsible for all IT requirements, including technical support of the institutional repository (Goobi, Intranda Viewer). Currently, he is working closely with the open source system VuFind, which will be modified and used as a discovery system in the future, under the name AKsearch.
