The management of digital data and the provision of data for third parties is the central responsibility of academia and is increasingly expected by research funders. Information from research processes should remain permanently available, be easy to retrieve and remain useful and understandable for future generations of researchers. A Data Management Plan (DMP) supports researchers from the very beginning of a project in dealing with the data life cycle, thinking about suitable formats, documentation and possibilities for long-term archiving, as well as considering possible sources of financial, legal or technical support.

This lecture will highlight the benefits of a DMP for various stakeholders. Diverse DMP solutions will be introduced, but particular attention will be paid to the basic information every DMP requires. The current requirements of Austrian and international research funders will be shared, and after the presentation, a discussion will be led by a representative from the WWTF, or Vienna Science and Technology Fund, which will approach the topic of DMPs from the perspective of research funders. Ideas for how institutional or external DMP services could be offered should also be discussed.
